+1 for Maekawa for an izakaya. Their menu variety is the closest to the Izakaya's i’ve had in LA and SF (oh how I is Furaibo and Oyaji’s). Haven’t found a good Yakiniku yet.

I would say Kenka is the closest thing to a bad izakaya in Shinjuku. Midtown has much better places like Riki.
