I’m with Carswell; sherry is the way to go. I find fino goes well with both artichoke and asparagus soups, both wine-killers. And there are such great values out there in sherry.

Jerez fino or in particular manzanilla (with its saline edge) is great with sushi. You have to be somewhere that has fresh stock, which will mean BYO from a high-turnover sherry store, not necessarily that easy to find in the US....

I agree with the viogner/rose ideas—actually if you can find a blend of viogner and sauvingnon-blanc...if not, a slightly dry rose ...Heitz Cellars has a great one, I just bought it at Vino! on California and Fillmore.
