You might try Murky Coffee, which has branches in Arlington and Capitol Hill. Excellent coffee, and the whole place seems like the places mentioned in the NYT article.

I’d say Murky Coffee in Capitol Hill and Arlington is the best local coffee shop. They’ve got wifi, talented baristas, amazing cupcakes and a cool atmosphere. I really like this place.
